Here at the Center of Dental Professionals, we understand our seniors. We know that someone’s age, young or old, does not define them. We also know that living productive, meaningful and comfortable lives throughout the second half of life is important to our patients, and we are committed to helping you achieve that possibility. As the average lifespan increases, we need to do everything we can to preserve our health longer and better. A major part of that is maintaining our oral health.

There’s no getting around the fact that aging takes its toll on our bodies, and as my grandfather would say, “Getting old isn’t for the faint of heart!” But that toll can be reduced by doing simple things to care for our bodies. One of those things is getting regular dental check-ups.

By getting your teeth cleaned, and by getting your general oral health checked by a doctor, you can catch problems before they turn into major dilemmas. It could mean getting removable dentures at 85 years old instead of 67, or it could mean preserving your gums well enough so that when you do need a new set of teeth, you can get implants instead of dentures. Or even better, it could mean making it all the way to the end with your original, beautiful smile.

By keeping your oral health at its best, you will preserve your quality of living. You won’t have to give up the joys of life, like your favorite fresh fruits or barbeque dishes. When you get implants instead of removable dentures, you can treat them like real teeth when it comes to cleaning, and you won’t have to worry about losing them. Without those unnecessary stressors, you will have more energy and enthusiasm to do the things you love.

I remember the months before my grandmother passed away, and one story stands out to me. As my grandparents were getting ready to go to church, they were unable to find my grandmother’s dentures. They mysteriously turned up after a while of looking, but I’m sure similar things have happened for many other seniors throughout the years.

I think this story illustrates the importance of our oral health in some interesting ways. First, my grandmother saw her dentures as part of her preparations for church, and was reluctant to go without them. To her, having a full set of nice looking teeth was important because she wanted to look nice, not just because she needed them to eat her favorite foods.

Second, our oral health can be preserved much more effectively with modern technology and practices, which may prevent the situation my grandmother was in. If dentures are right for you, give us a call and we will provide excellent care to you.

If you still have healthy teeth, don’t hesitate to come in so that it stays that way. We provide excellent care no matter what your dental needs are, and we are committed to helping our patients maintain their quality of life. You can reach us at 801-747-8015.
